Annie Brown
Annie Brown is an award-winning violinist, educator, and a popular musician anywhere lively fiddle music is played in Vancouver. Her stylistic influences range from European classical, Irish, Scottish and Cape Breton fiddling, to Jazz and Klezmer. She instructs full-time at Open Door Music School and the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. Other music projects include the Irish Wakers, Kitty Lie Over, and the Psycho Acoustic Ceili Band. You can hear her perform most Thursday nights at the Irish Heather in Gastown, as well as at many of the traditional music festivals around the province of British Columbia.

Mike Brown
Mike studied classical piano with Ronald Moir of “Duo Noblesse Oblige”, harpsichord with Doreen Oke, and jazz piano with Jillian Lebeck. He holds a Grade 10 Certificate in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music Toronto.
Mike Brown is a full-time freelance musician specializing in classica, world and new music. He holds a M. Ed from UBC and a M.Mus. from the City University of New York where he studied with Charles Neidich.

Michael Burnyeat
Michael Burnyeat started fiddle lessons in Vancouver here at the Open Door Music School then Celtic Traditions in 2009 at twelve years old.
Michael Burnyeat is a 2 time BC-Fiddle champion and 2 time finalist in the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Competition.
He has received instruction from some of North American’s top fiddlers, including Mark Sullivan, Calvin Vollrath, and Liz Carroll.
He is a regular jam session leader, including leading the sessions at the Jericho Folk Club for many years, and he is also the co-founder of the UBC Fiddle Club. In 2018 he released his first solo album of fiddle music entitled A Sense of Tradition. He has taught at Open Door Music for 3 years. He enjoys teaching all ages and levels, and in many fiddle styles, and he believes in catering to each student’s specific needs.

Tara Deng
Open Door Music is pleased to welcome Tara Deng to our instructor staff she has a warm persona and welcomes the Open Door Music School approach to teaching. Tara has been playing the piano since age 4, and has developed a passion for music over time. She is an RCM level 10 certified pianist and cellist, with a classical music background. She has played in numerous orchestras during her time and has experience with young children, leading them in the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra, as well as in small ensembles. She has an interest in pop music, and incorporates this into her repertoire.

Leon Feldman
Leon Feldman is a musician, composer, arranger, and producer and has taught piano, guitar, vocals, theory and music production for the last 15 years. Leon graduated from the Contemporary Instrumental Music Program at the V.C.C. School of Music, majoring in ‘Jazz and Contemporary Guitar’ and minoring in ‘Vocal Studies’. Receiving the “Fred Bass Scholarship Award” in the 3rd semester for the “most talented all round performer”.
Leon also interned with world renowned film composer, James Newton Howard at his studio, ‘JNH Studios’ interned at world renowned film composer, Hanz Zimmer’s studio, ‘Remote Control Productions’
Leon has been instrumental in the creation/release of 5 albums with different projects, having diverse musical skills as a guitarist, vocalist, piano player, bassist, drummer, composer, audio engineer, producer & arranger enjoying all of these rolls. Leon has completed electronic music production elective courses at VCC with producer credits on many albums.

Kai Gronberg
Kai Gronberg was born in Vancouver, BC and started playing violin at age 4. He had his first violin lessons at the Central Valley Academy of Music, and has also studied under many of Canada’s premier fiddle players such as Mark Sullivan Calvin Vollrath and Mike Sanyshyn.
Kai is a three time BC Provincial Champion, as well as being a participant at the annual Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Competition where he placed in the top 11 twice.
Kai has been teaching violin and fiddle lessons in Vancouver for 5 years and is familiar with the Suzuki Method, and the Royal Conservatory Method and uses both in his teachings alongside fiddle and other contemporary styles.

Therese Mellon
Therese Mellon is from county Derry in Ireland and grew up emersed in traditional Irish music and began playing the tin whistle at the age of 6 before progressing to the harp at the age of 8. Therese has competed in many competitions and festivals across Ireland, including the Fleadh and Scor, winning provincial titles in both harp and singing.
Therese is a friendly and enthusiastic harp teacher with over 10 years experience in teaching all levels and ages. Her passion for Irish music is evident in her teaching style, creating an environment that allows the student to find and develop their own unique style.

Daniel Tougas
Daniel Tougas is a guitarist and musician from Vancouver with a diploma in Contemporary Guitar from VCC School of Music. With over 10 years of teaching experience he enjoys working with students of all ages and skill levels, especially adult beginners and first-time students. Daniel enjoys teaching contemporary and traditional styles including pop, rock, and acoustic music, as well as music theory, but always welcomes the unique requests of each student. He aims to foster a relaxed and casual learning environment, to build long-term rapport with students along their musical journey. Daniel is available for individual lessons and group lessons (siblings, families, friends) for electric & acoustic guitar, bass guitar, 12-string guitar, and ukulele.

Michael Viens
Michael Viens has taught guitar lessons in Vancouver at Celtic Traditions School of Music, now re imagined as the Open Door Music School for the past 15 years. Michael is an all round musician who plays Guitar, Bodhran, Harmonica and has a great ear for harmonies perfected as a member of the acapella group The Melloyds. Michael brings this wealth of experience to each of his lessons to tailor each guitar lesson to the style and ability of his student.
Michael is a stalwart member of the local Celtic music scene since joining the local Celtic band Blackthorn in 1995. With Blackthorn, he has recorded four CDs and performed at Concerts, Celtic Festivals, Scottish Highland Games and Irish and Scottish Ceilidhs throughout the Pacific Northwest. He has appeared as a guest artist with the North Shore Celtic Ensemble, Vancouver Youth Choir, Laudate Singers and Capilano University Choir.

Matt Young
Open Door Music is pleased to welcome Matt Young to our instructor staff adding a contemporary yet traditional element to our music program. Matt has been teaching with us now for four years. Matt is a multi-instrumentalist and performer who has been playing for the last 13 years focusing on Piano and Guitar. Matt is also music producer and audio engineer centered around electronic music production through Ableton Live 10.
Matt was the musical director and session pianist tasked to compose and perform musical accompaniment for guest speakers at UBC for incoming students.
